Thanks Helen. How's it going now? I had similar with Chapiro- I sat on him with all the tack on and he just felt he couldn't move- he did in the end but it was stressy. I decided to take everything off and completly free shape it from the start- that was the beginning of my 'real' +ve R training. In the video you can see all his fiddle about behaviours saying 'help' I can't do this but he got more confident the more he understood the simplicity of it. At first you rely on the nature of the horse to move its feet at some point- you click or mark (with a word/sound) the merest thought of movement (even a shift of weight) and gradually they will start to offer a few steps- you then add the cue and click as you go until you have the behaviour under stimulus control. It might take a while but it is very powerful long term.

She was a bit better on Monday, we went in the school (big mistake, it was stifling!!) for a quick 10 minutes, and the only dancing around this time was I think due to horseflies, she put in some fancy moves, but there wasn't the same "I can't" body language to accompany them.....

This is only a little bit of vid, the bouncing around filmed was the only bit that happened, a lot more calm stuff happened first but I didn't film it all. Sand in there is still way too deep though

BTW, not sure what's happening with that link, Trudi, when I click on it I just get my own youtube channel

So last night's hack, Ali rode her in the bareback pad, not a buck in sight....... :hmmm: Not even too much disgruntlement at not being allowed to snack en route  She does this hilarious thing with her lips when she's looking to hoover up some grass in passing, looks like a bear trying to catch a salmon

Interesting about the bareback- one of my clients has a very short-backed horse and has to fit into a 15'' saddle to get it short enough- she also has the saddle that is a girth (the one your friend has) and that works well too.

Well there's no way my arse will fit into a 15" saddle!!

Have ordered the proper physio pad to go with the saddle, so will see if that makes a difference. Ali wants a Total Contact Saddle for Sky, so if it IS the saddle T objects to, we'll be getting one sooner rather than later I suspect  However, rode G in the Barefoot for the first time last night and he seemed to be moving a lot better in it than in his treed saddle, so at least one of them likes it
